I Like What I Like!

How I’m leaning into my interests this summer — and 3 ways you can too

Lately, I’ve been noticing how far I’ve gotten from the things I actually enjoy. With social media, influencers, and nonstop trends, it gets hard to tell what you like and what you’ve just been influenced into liking. I’ve had moments where I’ve asked myself, Do I even like this? Or have I just gotten used to it because everyone else does?

For example — the all-white living room look. You know the one: white couch, white carpet, everything spotless. The other day I thought… this really doesn’t make sense for my life. I’ve got two kids under five, and my aging mom lives with us. Someone’s always spilling something. It’s not practical. It’s not peaceful. And honestly, it’s not even me.

This summer, I’m doing things differently. I’ve been leaning into the outdoors — not just hiking, but simple stuff too. Like sitting outside with my coffee. Laying down a blanket in my patchy yard and looking at the sky. No, my lawn isn’t lush. But you know what? Grass is grass. And being outside still feels good. That’s what I like. And I’m letting that be enough.

Just because something looks nice online doesn’t mean it fits your real life. Lately, I’ve been asking: Who is this for? And does it make me happy?

Here’s how I’m doing it — and how you can too:

1

Take time to reflect
Lately, I’ve been noticing how far I’ve gotten from the things I actually enjoy. With social media, influencers, and nonstop trends, it gets hard to tell what you like and what you’ve just been influenced into liking. I’ve had moments where I’ve asked myself, Do I even like this? Or have I just gotten used to it because everyone else does?

2

Try something that makes you a little nervous
It doesn’t have to be big. Just something you’ve always been curious about but never tried. Maybe that’s hugging a tree. I know — sounds awkward, and I get secondhand embarrassment just thinking about it. But I heard it can actually give you energy. Here’s a link if you’re curious.

3

Be bold in the doing
For a long time, I thought loving nature meant you had to be super outdoorsy — like camping or climbing trees. But that’s not true. You can love nature your own way. Your old hobbies and interests are still valid, even if they look different now. Pick that thing back up. Do it your way.

For My Skimmers
  • Reflect on what really brings you joy
  • Try something new that stretches you a bit
  • Be bold in doing what feels good — even if it’s small
